All Pura Stainless products are made from stainless steel and medical grade silicone.

Pura bottles and nipples and lids are non-toxic and 100% free of BPA and EA. All bottles, components and accessories are independently tested by the world’s leading testing lab and certified free from detectable levels of bisphenol-a (BPA), lead, phthalates, nitrosamines or PVC. Plastic and aluminum bottles and/or plastic necks, spouts, straws and handles used on other stainless steel bottles cannot claim this as virtually all plastics (including BPA-free plastics) have been shown to release chemicals, associated with developmental problems and various forms of cancer.

STAINLESS STEEL 304 (18/8)

Food grade stainless steel is durable, does not require additional coatings, and does not impart a metallic taste to liquids.

All Pura bottles and sleeves are made from #304 (also known as 18/8) stainless steel, a compound long used in the food and medical industry and recognized as a sanitary, non-leaching, inert material (free of BPA, EA, etc.) . In addition, our stainless steel is not only 100% recyclable, but in general is usually 60% recycled, so Pura is also an environmentally progressive product.

One of the main advantages of # 304 stainless steel is the fact that it does not require coatings containing chemicals. Aluminum bottles are internally coated with a protective coating (usually based on epoxy) due to potential toxicity and reactivity issues with pure aluminium. But the use of such a coating defeats the whole point of a non-plastic bottle, since now you are actually drinking from a bottle of epoxy, which is actually no better than plastic bottles!

One of the most common myths about #304 stainless steel is that the bottle adds a metallic flavor to your drinks. Does pasteurized milk, draft beer, cooked pasta, or whatever you eat cooked in traditional steel utensils taste like metal? Of course not, and all Pura bottles are made from the same stainless steel used in milk pasteurization, brewing, glassware and cutlery. The fear of “metallic taste” comes from aluminum, not stainless steel, and this is a common objection that can be heard from glass bottle sellers. Fortunately, this is completely not the case, as high quality stainless steel has been used for decades in all types of food preparation/serving, as well as in medical settings. Nothing ever penetrates inert stainless steel # 304 (18/8) into food and drinks.

MEDICAL GRADE SILICONE

Premium silicone that has passed the most rigorous testing regime.

All silicone components offered by Pura have been developed by our experienced team of engineers in Santa Barbara, California and are made from the highest quality silicone. Each silicone top complies with US standards (FDA, CPSIA) as well as much more stringent European standards (EN14350 and German LFGB).

This kind of silicone is made from natural silicone, it is hypoallergenic and does not contain plastic, latex, BPA or EA. It can be heated and chewed without the risk of releasing toxins. Silicone has long been used in the surgical environment and as a material for baby nipples. Like steel, there are many types of silicone and the names can sometimes be confusing. The easiest way to tell if your baby bottle is using premium silicone is to make sure it meets the stringent European safety standard EN14350. Many silicone products sold in the US and in EU do not meet these European standards and as a safety conscious consumer you should check the EN14350 label on the packaging to be sure.

All Pura products meet or exceed all relevant FDA requirements. Since safety is our primary concern, we also meet and even exceed the stringent requirements of the Consumer Protection Act (CPSIA), European Commission Directive 10/2011, the European Union EN 14350 and the German LFGB. We’d love to share safety test reports with our customers – just ask!
